SSEP research identified six resource-clusters for creating a vibrant, stable and sustainable future for the next generation. We call these our Regional Economic Pillars.
Carefully organized around our excellent location, freight advantages, abundant natural resources, geography, skilled workforce and rich regional history, these pillars form the foundation of our Economic Development Plan.
Our strategic plan aligns with our core values, vision and mission, and provides a balanced approach to our long-term social, environmental and economic sustainability. This section explores each pillar in more detail and compares their potential.
The Pillars
- Overview & Looking Forward
- Destination Tourism
- Logistics and Distribution Hub & Municipal Infrastructure
- Water for Economic Development
- ValueAdded Agriculture Processing & Resource Innovation
Logistics & Distribution Hub
With direct access to the Highway 39 Bypass and the CANAMEX trade route, the development of a logistics and distribution hub within the RM of Estevan is a tremendous opportunity.
There is potential for an intermodal site that could include: a truck stop, co-packing facilities, pickup and delivery warehousing, light equipment manufacturing and assembly, data mining sites, and a hub for broadband or high-speed internet.
Municipal Infrastructure
To attract business to a region it is essential to have good infrastructure. Two key elements are roads and fire management.Proper roads can be critical for a business considering a commercial site because the access roads need to be adequate for traffic they will produce and their access to shipping.
The other key feature is fire management and suppression. In addition to the value and protection of life and property that a fire department brings to a community it also will make it more attractive to potential investors. When a company is looking to invest heavily in a region they are going to ensure that certain pieces of infrastructure are in place to protect their investment so it is important for the community to have a fire suppression plan, the equipment to manage a fire, and the manpower.
